JFS Honors the Marianne & Sheldon Lubar Family at Annual Luncheon Of Champions

Jewish Family Services (JFS) announces their annual springLuncheon of Champions event to be held on Tuesday, May 20, from 11:00am to 1:30pm at The Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The agency will recognize the community involvement of Marianne & Sheldon Lubar and the next generation: Kris and John, David and Madeleine, Susan and Oyvind and Joan and John.

Each member of the Lubar family has left their own mark in their communities. Their reach and impact is long and deep. JFS is privileged to recognize them for their accomplishments. “The Lubars long-term commitment to helping JFS meet its mission to serve vulnerable members of our community and their efforts to make their respective cities a better place to live makes them the perfect honorees for this year’s Luncheon,” said Sylvan Leabman, President/CEO of JFS.

Sheldon Lubar is the founder and chairman of Lubar & Co., a private investment firm, and has held governmental appointments under three U.S. presidents. He serves on the boards of a number of private companies and non-profit organizations and, along with Marianne, is a strong supporter of education and the cultural arts. Lubar has been a major funder for the Milwaukee Art Museum, the UW-Madison School of Business, and the UW-Milwaukee Business School, which has been renamed the UW-Milwaukee Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business in his honor.

Marianne Lubar’s many years of service have benefited education and cultural institutions such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Jewish Museum Milwaukee (founding President), the Milwaukee Jewish Federation (past board member), the Milwaukee Jewish Historical Society (Past President), the UW-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library (current board member) and many other local and statewide organizations.

The Lubar family grew up understanding the importance of giving back to their community. The community service of Kris Lubar MacDonald dates back to the 1980s, when she first became involved with the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, and eventually becoming its Chairperson. In addition, she has served as a board member of Jewish Federations of North America and National Women’s Philanthropy and is currently a board member of the Sabes JCC, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, and a member of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee’s Executive Committee and chair of its annual board fund.

David Lubar serves as President/CEO of Lubar & Co., and is a member of the board of directors of numerous public and private companies in the Milwaukee area, including BMO Harris, Northwestern Mutual Life and the Milwaukee Brewers. He also serves on many community boards, including the Milwaukee Jewish Federation (former Chairman), the Jewish Community Foundation (former Chairman), the United Way of Greater Milwaukee (Chairman and former co-chair of the annual campaign), and Froedtert Health System (Chairman). His wife, Madeleine, chaired the capital campaign to renovate Congregation Sinai, and currently is Chairman of the board of Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

Susan Lubar Solvang is President of Growing Minds, a non-profit she founded to give school age children and teachers the tools to experience classroom learning in safe, respectful classrooms. Offering the skills to find clarity and intentionality in one’s life, young or old, student or executive, has been a passion of Susan’s for many years. In addition, Susan serves on the boards of Our Next Generation and the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

Joan Lubar took an interest in philanthropy in her 20s when she moved back to Milwaukee. She started with organizations such as the Milwaukee Jewish Federation(presently chairs Women’s Philanthropy) and Planned Parenthood. Today, Joan serves on many committees and boards, but the project closest to her heart is the creation of The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center’s Jeffrey C. Siegel Quality of Life Center...in memory of her late husband and father of her children.

The Luncheon of Champions starts at 11:00am with registration, a raffle and a silent auction. Lunch will begin at noon with the program and awards ceremony to follow. Event co-chairs are Gerry Biller and Marlene Lauwasser. The Luncheon of Champions is open to the entire community.
