Friendship House Fellowship Starts Support Group at Jewish Family Services, Inc.

3/22/2012

Milwaukee, WI— Jewish Family Services (JFS), located at 1300 N. Jackson Street, recently began hosting the Friendship House Fellowship support group. The group, comprised of Jewish men and women, meets every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to pursue recovery from addiction and other related problems.

“This group was created to address that there are people within the Jewish community suffering from addiction,” explained co-founder, Jim M. “We want to bring the issue to the surface and make it known to all that there is a place where you can go to feel un-judged; where you can feel a sense of belonging and acceptance.”

The Fellowship has a similar approach to Alcoholics Anonymous; however, the founders wanted to ensure their Jewish heritage was being incorporated. Started in Mequon by three men and a Rabbi, the members wanted the ability to have room for others to come and receive the help and support they needed and deserved. Artie, a member of the Fellowship and current volunteer at JFS, reached out to individuals at the agency, and the group started to meet at JFS in mid-December.

“We came together in need of help; now we want to expand and help other Jews in recovery,” explained Artie. “Although things like this start slow, everything builds with momentum, especially through word of mouth.”

Sylvan Leabman, President/CEO of JFS states, “JFS embraces the philosophy behind the Friendship House Fellowship and we are happy to open our doors as a safe haven for individuals seeking help within the Jewish community, and to gain the support they need from their fellow peers.”

The requirements for membership are participation in a related Twelve-Step program and the desire to recover. Any individual who participates in the Fellowship meetings remains anonymous. The group is open to men and women over the age of 18, and individuals are requested to contact JFS at 414-390-5800 prior to their initial meeting.

Since 1867, Jewish Family Services has provided comprehensive social services to the Milwaukee area Jewish and general community. Its primary objective is to enable clients to reach their maximum potential and lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.
